  • Treatment options are available.
  • Many patients start to see results after just one treatment.
Why pelvic therapy?

Pelvic floor therapy can provide numerous benefits, including improved bladder and bowel control, reduced pelvic pain, and increased sexual function. It can also help with postpartum recovery and prevent future pelvic floor issues. With the guidance of Renew Pelvic Health, patients can learn exercises and techniques to strengthen and relax their pelvic floor muscles, leading to a better quality of life.

Who needs pelvic therapy?

One in three women and one in eight men suffer from pelvic dysfunction.  Pelvic therapy can be beneficial for a variety of individuals, including those who have experienced childbirth, pelvic surgery, or trauma to the pelvic area. It can also be helpful for those experiencing pelvic pain, urinary or fecal incontinence, or sexual dysfunction. If you are experiencing any of these issues, Renew Pelvic Therapy has a treatment option for you.

About Me

Through years of clinical experience and the development of a unique evidence-based approach,  I strive to give you compassionate, comfortable, and effective physical therapy.  I can help you with your pelvic issues, no matter how complex.  I specialize in prenatal and postpartum care, pelvic pain, incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, chronic pain, complex cases,  orthopedics, and more.

I received my Doctor of Physical Therapy from the University of Colorado Denver Anschutz. I began my career in orthopedics before developing a passion for pelvic health, postpartum, and pregnancy physical therapy.

Before college, I was a flamenco dancer living in Seville, Spain where I studied and taught at a professional dance academy for five years. My dance experience gave me a passion and respect for the human body and its complexity. This led me to pursue a career that would allow me to help people prevent and treat injuries. I became a Certified Massage Therapist and practiced massage for five years before deciding to transition to physical therapy.

My experiences as a dance teacher and massage therapist have provided me with a unique perspective, giving me patience, empathy, and communication skills that are invaluable in my physical therapy practice.  Further, I am the lucky mother of two young girls, who have helped me develop a strong understanding of the many ways to motivate and nurture at different developmental levels.

As a physical therapist, I merge my creativity, analytical skills, and love for learning to deliver the best evidence-based compassionate care to all my patients. I am at the forefront of current best practices through a commitment to continuing education. I optimize function throughout all body systems to optimize recovery of the musculoskeletal system.  Through me, patients learn to incorporate education, awareness, nutrition, healthy sleep habits, and stress management into their lifestyles.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is pelvic health physical therapy? I’ve never heard of it. Pelvic health physical therapy is a specialized type of physical therapy requiring advanced, post graduate training to address problems in the pelvic region. We are Doctors of Physical Therapy, meaning we have doctoral level education to take care of you. There are many muscles, nerves, blood vessels, connective tissues and joints in the pelvic region and problems in these can contribute to pain, issues with bowel and bladder control, pelvic organ support problems and sexual problems. At Renew Pelvic Health we provide you with one-on-one care that is individualized and directed towards achieving your goals. Your pelvic health involves a complex coordination of all of your body’s systems and we provide treatment that looks beyond solely the pelvic floor muscles. To get you the results you need, we will be examining and treating your low back, sacrum, hips, thighs and abdomen. Sometimes we find problems in people’s calves and feet, as well. Other people come in with neck and TMJ concerns that also may be throwing off their pelvic health. We will treat what we find and help you improve your overall function.

What should I expect on my first visit? Your practitioner will start by taking a thorough history of your symptoms. Be prepared to answer questions about your general health and lifestyle (including sleep, nutrition and exercise) and your medical history. If you’re being seen for pelvic health, we will discuss your bladder and bowel habits, as well as your sexual health.  Next, your posture, general movement and strength will be assessed. Depending upon your presentation, your practitioner may perform some special tests to reproduce your symptoms. If indicated, your practitioner may wish to assess your pelvic floor muscle with an internal (vaginal or rectal) examination. Maintaining your modesty and comfort is of utmost importance to us; we will ask your consent prior to all portions of the examination, and you always have a right to decline portions of the exam. You and your practitioner will discuss all findings of the examination and will collaborate to develop a treatment plan to help you reach your goals. Pelvic health initial evaluations are 75 minutes in order to allow for treatment time, so expect to receive some treatment during your first appointment.

What is the pelvic floor? The pelvic floor (also called the pelvic diaphragm) is a group of muscles that lie at the bottom of your pelvis. These muscles serve important functions for bowel, bladder and sexual health as well as providing support to your pelvic organs. The support to the organs is especially important for women because without this support the organs can descend through the vagina and develop a pelvic organ prolapse. The pelvic floor has a baseline level of activation at all times because they are postural muscles. They also have the ability to contract, which should cause them to lift up. Ideally, your pelvic floor contractions would have good strength, timing and speed. Additionally, they need to be able to lengthen at the appropriate times to allow for defecation and urination. These muscles do not operate in isolation; they coordinate with other muscles of the core, hips, and thighs to function properly. Our expertise lies in helping you rehabilitate these muscles and the coordination of all of your core muscles to resolve your bowel, bladder and sexual health issues and to optimize support to your organs.

What should I wear to my first appointment? Wear something that is comfortable and will allow you the freedom to move. We will be asking you to walk, squat and do a variety of functional movements within the PT clinic. If we perform an internal assessment of your pelvic floor muscles, you will be asked to undress from the waist down and will be underneath a sheet to maintain your modesty.

Do I need a referral? Colorado is a direct access state, which means that you do not need a referral from your doctor. However, at Renew Pelvic Health we enjoy coordinating care with your medical team, so please feel free to let us know who to contact.

Do you accept insurance? We provide physical therapy on a “fee at time of service” basis and are considered out-of-network for physical therapy. Services provided at Renew Pelvic Health can go towards your out-of-network benefits. Upon request, we will provide with a superbill (invoice), which you may submit to your insurance company for reimbursement after treatment. With high-deductible plans, receiving out-of-network care may be more affordable than opting to see an in-network provider. Check with your individual policy and benefits for more details. Unfortunately, insurance regulations and restrictions often dictate the amount of time and types of treatment that are covered. By opting to be an out-of-network provider, we are able to provide individualized treatment that will lead to quicker recovery with less visits. Please contact us with any additional questions.

What type of payment do you accept? We accept cash, check, credit card, HSA, and FSA.

I’m pregnant. When should I start pelvic PT? We suggest starting your pelvic PT sessions at the beginning of your second trimester. If you’re not having any symptoms, we will follow up for a birth prep visit around 34 weeks gestation to prepare for labor and delivery. Treatments may be more frequent if you’re experiencing neck pain, low back pain, pelvic girdle pain, hip pain or urinary or bowel symptoms.

I just had a baby. When should I start pelvic PT? We suggest starting your pelvic PT sessions at 6 weeks postpartum. At that time we can perform an internal pelvic floor assessment, as well as address any concerns with abdominals, posture, and return to exercise. If you are experiencing pain we can certainly assess any external areas prior to 6 weeks postpartum, such as back or hip pain, neck or upper back pain, as well as ergonomics related to caring for your baby.

I’m on my period. Should I still come to my appointment? Yes, you can still be treated during menses! Your comfort will always be taken into consideration at Renew Pelvic Health, so you can always choose to forego internal pelvic floor work at any time. There are usually lots of other areas we can focus treatment on.

How long will I have to come to physical therapy? Your treatment program, including the number of appointments, will be based on your condition, evaluation findings, goals and progress. Each person’s condition is different so we cannot provide a clear timeframe until we have met. Following your evaluation we can establish your plan of care, including number of visits.

What treatments do you offer? We employ a variety of treatments to optimize your recovery. Your evaluation will determine what is best for you. Some of the treatments we use include hands-on manual therapy, myofascial mobilization, cupping therapy, trigger point release, trigger point dry needling, joint mobilization, therapeutic exercise for strength and conditioning, neuromuscular reeducation for teaching you how to rehabilitate the firing/coordination of your muscles, stretching and functional range of motion activities, education in your condition, mind/body activities, home exercise program, and lifestyle recommendations.

I thought incontinence was just something that only happens after having a baby or when you get old. Do I really need physical therapy for this? Although very common, incontinence is NOT NORMAL! Urinary or fecal incontinence should not be happening at any age. We treat people of all ages who struggle with incontinence. You are not too young, and you do not have to be postpartum to have incontinence. In fact, there are plenty of research studies done on high level, young athletes who have incontinence. We have treated college aged people with incontinence, for example. And, if this is you, we know what to look for and how to design an effective treatment program to help you!

Can I come to physical therapy just for a checkup? I don't have any major problems right now. Absolutely! Physical therapists are musculoskeletal and movement specialists. You can come to Renew Pelvic Health for a checkup that is specific to your pelvic health or your general musculoskeletal, fitness and movement concerns. We can assess your fitness, joint mobility, strength, balance, posture or other concerns. If you have questions about what exercises and fitness routine might be recommended for you, we can advise you. Wondering how your pelvic floor is doing? We can let you know. Your checkup will give you recommendations for exercise, wellness and self-care going forward on your own, so you can maintain a healthy life and prevent issues later on.

I have a history of trauma and am nervous about pelvic PT. How can you help me? We are here to help you in a safe, compassionate and gentle environment. We understand that a history of trauma can be an important contributor to your well-being and your pelvic health challenges today. We use trauma-informed methods and together we will find a path forward. We work within your comfort zone and have many techniques we can utilize that you might prefer. We have techniques that can help shift the autonomic nervous system away from a sympathetic response of fight/flight and to create more tone in the parasympathetic nervous system and Vagus Nerve, the portion of your nervous system that calms our system.
